A RAAD Trip to Rowson Kitchens
One of the genuine perks of a husband-and-wife work partnership is the legitimate work trip.
When you have two young children and grandparents who live out of town, a proper reason to request child care is gold. The grandies get some QT and the kids are spoiled. And you get to do something important together, uninterrupted, without anyone asking for a snack.
Our trip to New Plymouth was exactly that. And we loved it!
We'd been set on meeting one of our favourite NZ designers on her home soil, surrounded by some of her beloved local work, for a while. Annika Rowson, of Rowson Kitchens, is in our opinion, one of the NZ's most talented, commercially sharp and detail-obsessed designers in the country.
So we missioned it down to New Plymouth. Long drive. Winding road. A full evening of inspiring podcasts and uninterrupted conversation in the car, sans kids, thank you grandparents.
Annika specialises in kitchens, but that description doesn't do it justice. She designs all the interior details that demand complex thought and genuine functionality: kitchens, bathrooms, ensuites, walk-in-wardrobes, cabinetry, shelving. The spaces within a home that make everything else work, and add a quiet sense of joy every time you use them. So we were genuinely excited to get the inside line on the RAAD details with her, in person.
At her showroom, Annika's partner Brad (also a husband-and-wife duo so we immediately felt at home) walked us through the workshop out the back. Their team handcrafts everything on site, then installs it themselves as a cohesive unit, where ever in New Zealand the client lives. They are meticulous in the truest sense.
We spent a few incredible days learning about their business, meeting some of their local community, and sampling as much of New Plymouth's food scene as we possibly could (see notes below).
The real privilege was being welcomed into several of Annika's clients' homes. An interior voyeur's dream. Hours spent creating and capturing RAAD in those exquisite spaces was pure joy.
What we learned about: materials pairings, stone colourways, veining and origins, surface effects, the obsessive art of detailing. Why a scullery might (or might not) be open plan. What the perfect lighting does in a space. How layering drawers creates seamless flow. Plus... a few ideas about new scent directions, because Annika, it turns out, has passsionate opinions on fine fragrance (we love her even more for it).
Oh… and some thoughts on new, limited edition Stainless Steel bottle colours. Stay tuned for more. Maybe.
Thanks for having us Rowson Kitchens.
Social Kitchen
Warm, buzzy, the kind of spot where you order more than you planned - and you have to have the blue cheese gnocchi. Don't skip it.

Monica's Eatery
We went here twice. Beautiful space, great coffee, and a menu that actually looks after everyone at the table - lovely staff too.

Bleached Café
Part café, part lifestyle store. Great organic coffee & sandwiches, relaxed vibe... the kind of place you pop in for a quick flat white and end up staying for an hour.

Joe's Garage
A proper neighbourhood café that does the classics really well. Cosy booths and solid food, great after a long drive.
